Consultation has concluded
2021 Update
Public consultation has concluded on the design of the new Vickers Park Playground!
The majority of public feedback received from the public engagement sessions of 2019 supported the overall theme of trees/tree forts, but also good support for both the historical as well as the storybook/fairy tale theme. In addition, natural or natural-looking materials with natural and earthy colours were preferred by a majority of residents.
In the 2021 City Capital Budget, City Council has approved the inclusion of $800,000 for the restoration of the Vickers Park playground into an accessible and inclusive hub for the south side of the city. The feedback Thunder Bay Parks & Open Spaces received from the public will be used to inform the Design/Build Request for Proposals, which we anticipate releasing in the summer of 2021, for construction in the spring of 2022.
How We Use Your Input:
The consultation was undertaken because the current playground area is not fully accessible and inefficient in its use of space. Play structures have been removed over the years and not replaced, and the remaining structures are aging and nearing the end of their useful life. The play turtle has become lonely and needs some company!
Accessibility and inclusivity will be of primary importance in the new design, complemented with the unique setting of this playground in a heritage park with mature trees.
