This past February, the city was awarded up to $20.7 million through the Federal Housing Accelerator Fund to fast track the development of new homes. This once in a generation opportunity will help us build Thunder Bay for the future. We have a housing crisis, and this crisis must be solved.

In addition, the city’s population and tax-base growth rates are unacceptably low and therefore we also need to carefully consider what can be done to accelerate business construction opportunities.

I have heard many comments suggesting that there are barriers and systemic delays to our collective, timely development efforts in the city. Fair enough. It’s time to discuss these perceived impediments to what we all want – a thriving, growing community with boundless opportunities. Although discussing the challenges must be the first step, we must also find solutions!

Our roundtable will provide a platform for you to discuss your concerns, then engage by offering innovative strategies, sharing best practices, and collaborating on a practical path forward. Let’s work together to address the critical need for housing and business construction within our city.

As the Chair for this roundtable, I am inviting you to bring your expertise and ideas to our meeting and I hope you will be able to find the time to join me at this important, and what I hope will be a very productive, event.

- John Collin, City Manager
