The City of Thunder Bay’s Public Works Open House is back — and everyone’s invited!

Join us for a free, family-friendly event that offers an exciting behind-the-scenes look at the important work our Public Works professionals do every day to keep Thunder Bay running smoothly.

Whether you're a curious kid who loves big trucks or an adult interested in how your city operates, there's something for everyone!

Location: Mountdale Yard – 410 Mountdale Road
Admission: FREE
Parking: Street parking available

🛠️ What to expect at this event:

Interactive Equipment Displays

Get an up-close look at City vehicles — including a garbage truck, snowplow, excavator, fire truck, rock truck, and more — fun for the whole family!

Family-Friendly Fun

  • Live music and entertainment

  • Tasty snacks (free)

  • Water fill station

  • Kids’ activities such as bouncy castles and games

  • Prize giveaways

Learn and Engage

  • Connect with City staff

  • Explore engagement stations showcasing City services and initiatives

  • Share your ideas and feedback on current projects and priorities


✨Public Works Week – New Community Tours for 2025
In celebration of Public Works Week, the City of Thunder Bay is pleased to introduce two new public tours:

  • 🚰 Bare Point Water Treatment Plant Tour – Thursday, May 22 at 11am
    Learn how the City provides safe, clean drinking water. Registration required. Free transportation available.

  • 🚒 Fire Station 3 Open House – Drop-in on Friday, May 23, 3:30 – 5:30 pm
    A family-friendly event featuring fire trucks, safety demonstrations, and a chance to meet Fire Rescue staff. No registration required.


🎨 Kids’ Art & Colouring Contest – Enter to Win!

As part of Public Works Week, we’re inviting kids 12 years and under to show their appreciation for our public workers through art!

Children can either colour our official colouring page or create their own original artwork that represents public works and the services that keep our city running.

📸 Once the masterpiece is complete, simply snap a photo of your child with their artwork and upload it using the form below.

🎁 Prizes to be won! Winners will be chosen at random.
🕛 Contest closes Saturday, May 25, at 11:59 pm.

Show your support for the people behind our roads, water, waste, and more — and have some creative fun along the way!
