Net-Zero Strategy: Community Survey #3
Thunder Bay’s Net-Zero Strategy
As a result of a climate emergency declaration in January of 2020, the City has moved towards a net-zero GHG emissions target for the community. This is a very ambitious target requiring partnerships with all community members and senior levels of government. Meeting the net-zero target is achievable and will transform our city into one that is climate-positive and a leader in Ontario and Canada.
The Target: Net-Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050.
For Thunder Bay, “net-zero” means eliminating carbon emissions as much as possible and using carbon removal (i.e. natural and/or technological sequestration) to reduce remaining carbon emissions. Actions to mitigate GHG emissions will take Thunder Bay most of the way to the net-zero target. Purchasing carbon offsets, planting vegetation, and/or installing atmospheric carbon removal technology will also be required to reach net-zero emissions as we move to 2050.
Provide your input!
The draft Net-Zero Strategy (NZS) has been presented to City Council for consideration and we want to get your input on the key elements of this plan. The draft Net-Zero Strategy is available to download from the Document Library. Please check out the Strategy before completing the survey. Several very ambitious community targets need to be met and are presented below. Please provide your feedback and let us know where you need more information.
