Background:

Unfortunately, the popular wooden structures in the current playground that have sparked the imagination of generations of kids are getting old and must be replaced for safety reasons.

The unique setting of this playground adjacent to the forest, farm and chalet provides many opportunities to explore in the redesign.

In summer/fall 2019, The City of Thunder Bay’s Parks & Open Spaces Section sought the public's feedback to help shape the redesign of the playground at Centennial Park. A online Survey was made available to the public, along with an idea board at the site. Thank you for the many detailed responses!

Survey and Idea Board Results:

The most important results of the public consultation were:
1) Respondents prefer the look and feel of wood structures for this site

2) "Woodland Adventure" is the favoured theme for this treed setting

Status - Summer 2020:

After public feedback was gathered, necessary measures for COVID-19 delayed plans to complete the design and begin construction of the new Adventure Playground.

Removal of the old play area structures will begin in late July, 2020, and construction of the new Adventure Playground will now take place in 2021.

The existing play area's train, car and swing set will remain open for use in the 2020 season, but will eventually be removed to make way for the Adventure Playground.

How Your Input Is Used:

It is important to understand the needs of those utilizing the playgrounds. If we know what the users would like, there is a better chance we can incorporate the ideas and increase the park's usage. Our goal is to promote physical activity and spending time outdoors.

The City has summarized the results of the citizen input given through the survey and idea board. The playground design concept will be based on resident feedback and Administration's analysis.
