Final Report:

Thank you to everyone who provided input on this project. We invite you to Read the Final Plans for the Mountdale Boat Launch.

Past Engagement:

The City of Thunder Bay Parks & Open Spaces Section and Lakehead Region Conservation Authority (LRCA) went to the community for feedback on proposed improvements at the Mountdale/Neste Boat Launch and surrounding park area on the Kaministiquia River. The improvements to the area will be done in phases; the first phase will involve environmental and ecological improvements (biofiltration basins and site greening) to enhance riparian habitat and reduce impacts of stormwater runoff at the site.

The joint goal of LRCA and the Parks & Open Spaces Section at the early phase of the project was to increase vegetation along the riverbank and add biofiltration basins to catch and filter water before it enters the Kaministiquia River. Improvements to the parking area, accessible dock, and viewing platform were to be addressed as funding became available.

Our online survey is now closed. Thank you for your feedback. Take a look at the Concept Plan for Mountdale/Neste Boat Launch, which has been updated based on public feedback.

Proposed Phase 1 restoration activities for Mountdale Boat Launch include:

  • Enhancing and expanding the vegetative buffer beside the river
  • De-paving the asphalt area west of the boat launch to allow for habitat restoration and non-vehicular park uses
  • Installation of three biofiltration basins to catch and filter runoff
  • Managing invasive species and planting indigenous vegetation
  • Creating an accessible pedestrian trail leading from the parking lot to the viewing platform
  • Asphalt paving of the parking area
  • Addition of benches and interpretive signage

Future activities:

  • Relocating and renovating the pier to current accessible standards
  • Enhancing and renovating the overlook
  • Improving site safety by adding solar lighting
  • Further enhancing and completing green infrastructure
  • Additional parking is being contemplated on lands directly north of the current parking area pending future discussions with the private landowner
