What is public engagement?

Public engagement is how we connect with you, our community, to share information, hear your ideas, and involve you in decisions that shape Thunder Bay.

It’s an ongoing conversation that can include surveys, open houses, online discussions, and general feedback.

    Why does public engagement matter?

Because better decisions come from better input.

Your feedback helps us understand what’s working, what isn’t, and what matters most to residents. It helps shape City services, programs, policies, and major projects.

Does my feedback actually influence decisions?

Yes, but it’s one part of the bigger picture.

We consider community input alongside things like budget, legislation, long-term impacts, and the needs of the broader community. The goal is to make informed decisions that benefit Thunder Bay as a whole.

    How can I get involved?

There are lots of ways to take part:

    • Participate in surveys, polls, and discussions on this site
    • Attend public meetings or open houses
    • Join committees or working groups
    • Share your thoughts anytime using our general feedback form

    What happens to my feedback?

Your input is reviewed by City staff and considered alongside other feedback, technical information, and community needs.

Depending on the project, it may:

    • Help shape a project or initiative
    • Inform recommendations to City Council
    • Influence future planning and service improvements

When does the City engage with the public?

We engage when your input can help shape or inform decisions, including:

    • Changes to services or programs
    • Neighbourhood or area improvements
    • Major projects or strategic initiatives
    • Situations where engagement is required by legislation

Whenever possible, we aim to go beyond the minimum requirements.

How does the City try to make engagement meaningful?

    We follow three key principles:

    • Inclusive – making space for a wide range of voices
    • Meaningful – focusing on real issues that impact residents
    • Responsive – listening and reflecting what we hear in our work

Can I participate in more than one project?

    Absolutely. We encourage it.

The more perspectives we hear, the better we can understand the needs of the community.

How do I stay informed about engagement opportunities?

    You can:

    • Check this site regularly
    • Follow the City’s social media channels
    • Subscribe to updates on specific projects (when available)

Why does the City use a public engagement framework?

Our Public Engagement Framework helps guide how we involve the community in decisions.

It ensures engagement is clear, consistent, and focused on gathering meaningful input to support better decision-making.
