Former Dease Pool Site Options & Dease Street Traffic Calming

Background:

There has been broad community support for the redevelopment plan for Dease Park. Priority items include a year round boarded rink with asphalt surface and basketball nets, walking paths with a sitting area, and an open green space. Phased construction is scheduled to begin this fall.

As a result of consultations, new redevelopment options involving a proposed skate park have been presented for the former Dease Pool site. Various proposed traffic calming options have also been developed for Dease Street to potentially increase safety between Dease Park and the former Dease Pool Site.

An online survey was available until Oct. 11, 2021. The survey gathered feedback on the proposed development of the former Dease Pool site and Dease Street between McKellar Street and Vickers Street.

Feedback from previous public engagement sessions as well as 2020 - 2021 targeted public engagement sessions with students at McKellar Park School, Older Adults in the neighbourhood, the City of Thunder Bay Anishinaabe Elder Council, and the Skateboard Coalition, was included in the update on potential future uses of the Dease Pool/Dease Park sites (see below Report).

City staff have confirmed broad community support for the redevelopment plan for Dease Park. The redevelopment of Dease Park will be a phased project. External funding, and/or future capital investments in addition to the approved 2021 budget will be required to realize the entire plan. Redevelopment of the former Dease Pool site is still under consideration.

Past Engagement Activities:

Targeted Engagement Sessions were held from December 3, 2021 – February 5, 2021. These have included:

• Virtual Session with McKellar Park School students in Grades 3-8
• Survey to all McKellar Park School Students JK – Gr 8
• Older Adult one-on-one telephone consultations
• Consultation with City of Thunder Bay Anishinaabe Elder Council
• Consultation with the Skateboard Coalition
