Why is Thunder Bay Transit undertaking bus stop balancing?

To improve comfort, reduce travel times, save on operational costs, and improve schedule reliability.

How close together are bus stops across the City?

Bus stops should be spaced 250 to 500 metres apart (a 3–6 minute walk). Currently, approximately 50% of the stops across the City are less than 250 metres apart, often within the same block. Some stops are even as close as 80 metres apart.

How much time do buses spend at stops?

About one-seventh of total travel time is spent waiting at bus stops.

How does Transit decide which stops to remove?

We evaluate each stop for accessibility, ridership, nearby destinations, physical constraints (such as hills), spacing, and impacts on other routes. We also consider whether there’s a stop in the opposite direction, crosswalks nearby, or stop amenities (like shelters or waste containers).

    How will feedback be used?

Feedback from customers, residents, businesses, and operators will shape which changes become permanent and how the program will expand to other routes.

My stop is being removed, where can I find information as to where the next closest stop is?

Look for signage at all affected stops. You can also find details on the Transit App and NextLift. Check the list of impacted stops for Route 10 – Northwood and Route 14 – Arthur.
