Our Way Forward: Advancing Indigenous Relations in Thunder Bay MAAMAWE

Background

We are planning our way forward to advance Indigenous Relations in Thunder Bay MAAMAWE (all together).

A seven year Indigenous Relations Strategy has been created identifying important activities, our 11 commitments, to improve Indigenous Relations in our community. We reached out to the community to help us prioritize these actions.

We asked: Do you want to see more Indigenous spaces in the City? Increased awareness of Indigenous culture? More responsive City services? More community supports? A focus on Anti-Racism education? We invited you to share your feedback on these and other initiatives.

From March 14 - April 30, a community survey was available online and at City Hall, Branches of the Thunder Bay Public Library, the Fort William First Nation Office, and Anishnawbe Mushkiki - Community Health & Wellness Aboriginal Access Centre. Input was also collected through an online Virtual Idea Board.

The Indigenous Relations Team is now holding community partner engagement sessions. The sessions provide an opportunity to discuss the commitments in the Indigenous Relations Strategy and how collectively MAAMAWE we see these implemented in our community. Our conversation will be on prioritizing what activities to focus on each year and ways to collaboratively move these forward.

Next Steps

We will use the information collected through our community survey and partner engagement sessions to create annual implementation plans which will see the commitments in the Indigenous Relations & Inclusion Strategy realized in Thunder Bay. MAAMAWE (all together) we are planning our way forward to advance Indigenous Relations in Thunder Bay.

To enhance relationships with Indigenous partners and communities, while advancing Indigenous Peoples' inclusion in Thunder Bay through opportunities and growth.

Actions of the Indigenous Relations Office are guided by the City of Thunder Bay Anishinaabe Elders Council and local Indigenous community partners.
